Christmas of the Bird

On Christmas Eve my husband and I were riding through the neighborhood looking at Christmas lights and reminiscing about Christmas in the past. We spoke of how when we were kids Christmas would have a theme. His favorite Christmas was the year he and his brothers recieved dirt bikes. All gifts that year were related to dirt bikes...helmets, pads, etc. My favorite memory was the Christmas of Barbie. As we were riding around we said that Christmas gifts don't seem to follow a theme when a person is grown.

Christmas morning we were drinking Poinsetta Punch and opening our gifts. I pointed out which gift I wanted my husband to open first. I explained that it wasn't really a gift for him, but something for our house. The first gift was a bird feeder. My husband said that since he had opened the feeder I should open the next gift, a squirrel baffle to keep squirrels off of bird feeders. We laughed about the coincident. We had our theme! We recieved everything a bird would need, from blue bird houses to poles to hold purple martin houses.

2009 is the Christmas of the Bird.

Christmas Trees

We have a small arificial Christmas tree in our lounge. It looks great from the road. The tree is sitting on a bench in the bay window and fills the center of the window; giving the illusion of a full tree. From inside the tree looks small and scrawny.

There are no kids in our house to admire a full tree. The dogs run wild and could topple the tree easily. Our house is so full of furniture and a large tree would crowd the room. All valid reasons for choosing a 4 foot tree, true, but I miss having a large tree.

Next year I am going to be like the rest of America and crowd up my small lounge with a large, messy tree.
